Explaining Dyslexia to a child (or adult) can be daunting but luckily there is a wealth of books and resources that can help.
More and more books are framing dyslexia in a positive light. Yes there are challenges but the way your brain works differently can also be your superpower!
This is not an exhaustive list but I thought I would run through a few of my favourites.
Mission Dyslexia
by Julie McNeill, Rossie Stone and Paul McNeill
This is one of my favourite books to explain dyslexia particularly for Primary aged children. It is an interactive book for parents to work through with their children. Furthermore, it offers a view of the positive aspects of dyslexia without shying away from the challenges that are also present.
This book is full of useful tips and strategies, therefore is a brilliant starting point for a meaningful discussion about what is hard and what works.
Xtraordinary People: Made by Dyslexia
by Kate Griggs
This book explores the strengths that people with dyslexia often have as well as acknowledging the challenges. The book encourages children to think about what they are good at.
It also provides inspirational words from successful dyslexic individuals including a palaeontologist, dancer and even a princess!
The Illustrated Guide to Dyslexia and Its Amazing People
by Kate Power and Kathy Iwanczak Forsyth
This a great book for older children and explores dyslexia in a readable and engaging format. It is full of useful hints and tips and has a section about how thinking differently has helped people in their chosen careers.
This idea of 'The Amazing People and the Jobs They Do' is carried on in a further book by the authors...
The Bigger Picture Book of Amazing Dyslexics and the Jobs They Do
by Kate Power and Kathy Iwanczak Forsyth
This book is full of inspirational people who happen to be dyslexic, from creative designers to comedians to consultant surgeons. Each sharing their story of challenges and triumphs.
There are many more brilliant books, podcasts and videos out there.
I will often share resources I find on my Facebook page so follow JLS Education to keep up to date.
